Asva Sastra - the Science of Horses-Pancha Kalyani

Dear Agathiyarians,

Let us talk about the royal horse.
There is a sastra called Asva Sastra - the Science of Horses. It was
one of the 64 Arts of the ancient Indians. This science had several branches.
There was another sastra called Saamudrika Lakshana. This dealt with the
Science of Phyisognomy - Body structure of the human beings. This was
applied to human beings. There was a similar science which was applied to horses. The colour combinations, the height, weight, built, length of legs, tail, neck, head, shape of ears, hoofs, etc. The examination and classification of the horse was known as 'Asva Pariiksha'. The therapeutics applied to horses was known as Asva Vaakata. The training of the horse and various stunts used by
the horse rider was also well developed. The Central Asians like the
Huns, Schythians, Parthians, Mongols, and Turks excelled in this field.
The horses tail must touch the ground. The best horse was considered
as belonging to the class of 'Pancha Kalyani'
Some of horses could relate very well with the master.
One such horse was Bucephalus - the horse belonging to Alexander the Great. Alexander was a reskless fighter. He would rush into the thick of battles. Many times he was surrounded by numerous enemies. And several times, he was wounded or fainted. During all those times, Bucephalus used to rush out of the melee of battle and carry Alexander to safety.
During the Battle of Hydaspes which he fought against the Indian king
Porus, Bucephalus jumped up onto the battle elephant of Porus. At that
time an Indian archer shot an arrow at Bucephalus and it died.
Alexander buried it with full honours and build a town called Bucephalus
in its honour.
Till date, archeologists could not find out where it was sited.
