The correct form of the name is 'EDDAPPA'. It is the name of a dynasty of feudal war lords who became minor rulers over a principality in Tirunelveli Seemai under the Madurai Nayakkar rulers.
Edda or Eddi means something like kettikkaaran.
There have been more than 30 Eddappa Naayakkars till now.
One among them sided with the British East India Company by adding his forces to theirs because of treaty of alliance.
The Eddappas had territorial problems with the Kattabommu Nayakkars who actually played out the Eddappas and the Pancha Pandya rulers.
The feud is an old one.
Only one Eddappa joined the British. But the rulers of Pudukkottai, Tanjavur and many other Polygar rulers also joined at that time period.
Eddpaa was made to stand as a monument or betrayal because of the author MaPoSivagnanam in his book about KattaBommu has demonised Eddppa without understanding real history. He fictionalised the whole thing.
The movie Veera Pandya Kattabomman made matters worse.
All along, the Eddppas were patrons of arts, literature and music.
Bharathiyar was once a court poet of Venkateswara Eddappa Bhupathi. The Muslim author of Seera Puranam was also one of the beneficiaries of the Eddappas.
MuthuSwamy Dheekshithar - one of the Sanggeetha Mummuurthis of Tamil Classical Music - was supported by one of the Eddappas and has glorified him in one of his creations.
I think this is enough for now.
